I love you, you know. You’re my very best friend. The one I come home to every night and hug, kiss and hold tight.
You’re my life. You’re my world. You have been ever since I brought you home. Ever since you became mine a year and a half ago.
I love your tail wags when I get home from being away. It’s like I’ve been gone for a lot longer than I actually have been. You’re always so excited and happy to have me back, because you know that the rest of the night will be spent loving you.
I love your kisses. They are rare – you like to snub. But when you actually finally do give me a lick, I can’t help but smile. In that moment I know you love me, I know you feel safe with me, and I know you’re mine.
I love the way you look at me with those dopy eyes. It usually happens when you want something: a pet, a bathroom break, a piece of my pizza crust. But it doesn’t matter that you are bribing me with your cuteness, because the fact is, you’re bribing me. You’re coming to me to love you and take care of you. Because you know that there is no other human in this world that can love you quite the way I do.
Most importantly, I love the way you love me unconditionally. You can’t speak. You can’t actually tell me those words. But you don’t have to – I already know. It’s the way you cuddle beside me when I’m watching a movie or going to bed. The way you give me your paw even when I don’t ask, because you want some extra attention or just want to let me know you’re still there. The way that no matter how upset I get or how long I’m away from you, you never forget me. The way that you love me just the way I am, and would never want me to be anyone else.
You’re my biggest blessing. You’re my biggest accomplishment. You’re the biggest and most important part of me.
My life changed, for the better, when I brought you home from that shelter. You have always been there for me through any circumstance. I don’t know how anyone in this life survives without an animal like you.
And they don’t have to. October is National Adopt A Shelter Pet Month. So go out to your local shelter and just look around. I’m sure there will be one animal there that completely steals your heart.
I know that was the case with me, and ever since that day, I’ve been truly blessed with my best friend. Sure he’s a canine who drools, sheds, and farts, but I wouldn’t change it for the world. He loves me through anything and he thinks I am the most incredible person in the universe.
Go out today and find a love like that.
